Coach creed and serial numbers – There is a history on the creeds and serial numbers, a buyer should know very well the year the vintage bag is manufactured. 

 

• 60’s - Coach bags produced in the 60’s has capital letters on its creed, is “MADE IN NEW YORK CITY, U.S.A” and has NO serial numbers. 

 

• 70’s - For those Coach bags made in the 70’s, the serial numbers (all numbers) are in this format, “XXX-XXXX”. Note that the last four numbers do not signify a style number, each bag has a different number combination. Coach bags made in the 70’s or earlier are hard to find, they are vintage, rare and are authentically made in NYC.

 

Later, when Coach began to manufacture in multiple locations in the US, the creed was signed off with “MADE IN U.S.A”. There are a few exceptions with a no-dash serial number “XXXXXXXX” that has the number “8” in it. Still written in all numbers.

 

• 80’s - If your bag is produced in the 80’s the serial number’s format is changed to “XXXX-XXX”. The last 3 numbers still do not correspond to the style number, and this string is still an all number format.

 

• 90’s – 2000’s - It was only during the 90’s that Coach used a number and letter format. This time, the last four digits correspond to a style number. You may find bags with the same set of numbers since these registration numbers are not unique. Wordings of the creed are still written in all caps in states where the bag is handcrafted. The only difference in the 2000 and latter bags is the format, instead of having four digits for the style number, it has five.

 

So, to conclude, it is best to visit authorized Coach outlets to see, feel and smell the real Coach. That way, you’d know for sure the true essence of a Coach and could spot one that is really a treasure.
